Bay of Biscay – A little History

People lived in the Pyrenees Atlantic part of France and thrived here for centuries. The economy was mainly based on agriculture and fishing. Like other agriculture-based communities, the region became well known for delicious food and welcoming hospitality. Europe’s surfing and Atlantic sailing destination. In 1660 King Louis the XIV moved to Saint-Jean-de-Luz and married María-Tersea of Spain. This ended centuries long wars between the two countries. The coastal towns of the Basque region of France became seaside escapes for aristocrats, courtesans and the rich and famous. For example, Biarritz is where Coco Chanel first made her fashion and design fortune in the early 20th century. There are many things to do on the Atlantic Coast of the Basque Region. You can take advantage of many of the activities or simply sit on the beach and watch the sailboats and surfers.

St Jean de Luz

St Jean de Luz is a famous seaside town with so much to do and see. It has a long pristine beach, a marina and centuries old historical buildings. One of the favorite pastimes of the locals is to stroll the streets of the historic downtown area, with its colorful and magnificent architecture. There is plenty to do and see in this scenic town.

Hendaye

Hendaye is located 30 minutes SW of Biarritz on the border of France and Spain. It is a beautiful small city, known for its quiet and peaceful pristine beaches. It is surrounded by the Pyrenees Mountains Foothills on the Bay of Chingoudy. Easily walking distance to Spain, all you need to do is walk towards the train station and across the bridge that separates the two countries.

The SW region of France is home to some very famous bakeries, Michelin starred restaurants, and fresh seafood joints. If you enjoy food and beverage, you will find a variety of fantastic restaurants that serve both traditional Basque and international cuisines.

Les Halles covered market Biarritz has a variety of fresh food and drink. It’s open late during the summer. There is a food and crafts market in the Iraty district on Fridays.

Saint Jean de Luz

There are daily and weekend markets in Sain Jean de Luz. There is a daily covered market in Les Halles and an outdoor market, on boulevard Victor Hugo.
